Dear Editor,
Mr. Eric Phillips sees what he calls a quiet holocaust in Guyana . He claims that indifference has become the attitude of Indians and many in the international community to the plight of Africans in Guyana. He offers no proof that the “ordinary” Indians are that much better off than their fellow Africans, who together make up the majority of Guyanese. He talks about others (?) choosing the “Afro-Guyanese” leaders and agenda, warns of rebellion and even death in pursuit of freedom, justice and equality.
Mr. Phillips seems to be the only Afro-Guyanese not selected either by the “other people” or even the electorate. If shared government means the sharing of ministerial positions and agreed upon policies, then only the racially conscious care what ministers look like, if all benefit from good governance. However, if it is simply a matter of sharing jobs and gaining personal power, we will have to wait for a better option, such as real multi-ethnic national parties. Meantime, let’s use the system to avoid the “impending” holocaust.
Yours faithfully,
