Taking home the gold and outdistancing the other runners to win the 100M sprint at the Olympics was once the dream of recently crowned Miss Guyana Talented Teen Trisana Cox but now the former national athlete is concentrating on becoming a paediatrician.
The former dancer, choreographer, debater, athlete and all round student-turned model revealed recently to The Scene that she hopes to one day enter the Miss World or even the Miss Universe pageant. She, however, does not want to make that her focus at this time since she is busy studying to be able to live her dream as a children’s doctor. Possibly after graduation, she hinted, because it’s a lot to focus on at this time. Her priority right now, the teen said, is her studies.
The Scene sat down with Cox and she told us that last March while still at Queen’s College she participated in the 4 x 400M relay and another race in a Barbados meet and captured two bronze medals. She disclosed that she was a former national athlete whose specialty was the 100M sprint but she preferred the 400M race. While at school, Cox said she was involved in modelling, was part of the interactive club and an avid debater. She spent five years at the Bishops’ High School and completed her GCE A levels at Queen’s College where she did very well.
But even as she focussed on her studies the beauty queen was always on the go and tackling a variety of interests. She has been dancing since the age of ten and told The Scene that she has even choreographed dances and was also a member of the National Dance School.
The teen credits her mother as her inspiration and said that it was her mother and friends who encouraged her to enter the Miss Talented Teen pageant. Her father also gave his support.
She had attended the talented teen pageants before and was always impressed with them. This was not her first time participating in a pageant either since in 2003 she and her mother were part of the mother and daughter pageant and had placed second.
Cox is the baby of her family and the only girl. Giving us a feel for what it was like to be part of the recent pageant, the Atlantic Gardens resident said that as the countdown to pageant night approached, she had a strict routine and had rehearsals every afternoon for one month.
Each day was a new experience and she was trained in ballroom dancing, posture and personal development. She said that all the delegates spent the day with the children at the Mahaica Children’s Home where they took personal care items for the children. It is her wish to adopt the home during her reign and, in the company of the delegates of the recently held pageant, to spend part of the Christmas season with the children. She described the visit as a memorable one and noted that it was nice giving back to people. It is not her first time working with children and she has helped primary school students to read.
Speaking about the pageant she stated that it was an experience she does not regret. She said that a Mr Powell helped to choreograph the opening dance segment of the show while two other persons worked on the evening gown and swim wear routines. She said that she was very excited to do ballroom dancing for the first time and the training helped her to be a more disciplined person. Her aunt Debra Watson designed her gown which won her the best gown prize. Fashion designer Olympia Small Sonaram designed all the swimsuits worn on pageant night by the delegates and Dereck Moore designed her costume “Forest Treasure”. She was sponsored by Orshan Jels Beauty and Gift Shop.
On pageant night, the teen said she was a bit nervous but did not have time to feel the effects and felt that the show ended really quickly. She stated that her aim was to go out and do her best while having fun and she did just that.
Cox is supposed to be representing Guyana next August at the Miss Jaycees pageant in Antigua but right now she is absorbed in her studies at the University of Guyana.
She did not only win the crown and best gown but also won prizes for intelligence, body beautiful and tied with third runner-up Novi Thompson for the Miss Congeniality award.
