Unoccupied house lots overgrown with bush pose a security threat and those persons who have not built on the land may have their lots repossessed.
Minister of Housing and Water Harry Narine Nawbatt made this disclosure on a recent visit to areas in Region Ten where he also distributed 16 land titles to persons in Ituni.
According to a Government Information Agency (GINA) press release, residents of Linden told the minister that some persons who were given house lots had not paid for them or were not occupying them. Many of those persons, they said, had migrated leaving the lots covered with bush which posed a security hazard. Meantime those in need of these lots have been applying for years but were without house lots.
The minister in response urged those residents who were allocated lots to occupy them. He also stated that the ministry would have to repossess house lots from persons who have not built on them and give them to persons in need. The release added that Nawbatt emphasised that it was against the law to build on any land without permission from the Government.
Some of the areas visited by the minister were Kwakwani, Lamp Island, Ituni and Hururu.
