A New Amsterdam (NA) woman walked away with $80,000 in groceries during a one-minute shopping spree on Wednesday after she was selected a winner in the Inner Circle Scotiabank Credit Card promotion.
Selestine La Rose, of Stanleytown, wasted no time to fill almost four carts with items including large cans of milk, big buckets of margarine and soap powder, fabric softener and cereals at Lavi’s Bargain Centre. At the end of the 60-second spree the woman thought she had not done justice to the time but, on finding out she went beyond the $80,000 target and that she had obtained goods amounting to $85,945 La Rose jumped for joy and opted to pay the extra cash.
La Rose told reporters she was “happy and excited” when she heard that she was selected and she thanked Scotiabank for holding the promotion. She said she finds the card useful as she does not have to “walk around with a lot of cash.” La Rose said she regrets that many more NA stores are not using the card and she hopes that they start doing so.
As regard the promotion Branch Manager Phillip Freeman said a drawing is held weekly and every card holder has a chance to win a voucher of $10,000 after using their credit cards to purchase items amounting to a minimum of $5,000 from selected supermarkets. Card-users are also given a chance to enter the monthly shopping spree.
Credit Officer at the bank Mohamed Azim said the promotion started on September 1 and will end at month-end. In explaining the rules of the spree he said while someone was allowed to assist La Rose with pushing the carts she was the only one who could have selected the items.
