Members of the Government Pensioners’ Association of Guyana (GPAG) last week voiced concerns about issues affecting them at a programme held to mark their 58th anniversary celebration.
According to a Government Information Agency (GINA) press release the Ministry of Human Services and Social Security hosted the fete; starting with a church service at St Sidwell’s Church followed by a luncheon at the Waterchris restaurant. The programme included a recitation of inspirational poems and quotes by members and a musical interlude during an entertainment session.
Minister Priya Manickchand addressed the longest serving members of organizations such as teachers, post masters, principals and service men and women of the association. Cecil Cunha was recognized as one of the oldest members at the gathering. He had been awarded a Medal of Service for his long service and dedication to Guyana. Manickchand told the group that the government is grateful for the members’ contributions in the various sectors as they have “paved the way for our beautiful country.” She also told the gathering that they can still make valuable contributions to the country by using their knowledge and experience to further development.
Manickchand also told the group about the Consultation Paper on sexual violence (Stamp it out) and urged them to contribute to the process in order to speed up the process for legislation. The minister assured the group that their participation would be appreciated adding that she’d be delighted if other organizations also contributed. Many members said they were grateful for the minister’s efforts to wipe out violence as they were concerned about the escalating violence against women and young girls. The elders also told the minister that they were distressed about the prevailing minibus culture. In addition to their disgust about the loud and lewd music one member also complained that buses often refuse to pick them up. She suggested that special transportation be arranged for seniors especially those who have to travel to collect their pensions.
