Guyana won the cycling competition of the annual Inter-Guiana Games when the event climaxed with the 60km cycle road race yesterday.
Having won the team time trial on Saturday, the Guyanese came back yesterday to take three of the top four places in the road race which formed the second part of the Inter-Guiana games cycling competition.
Yesterday’s race, which started at Nismes, proceeded to Bushy Park and ended at the Demerara Harbour Bridge.
The race was won by Alonso Greaves in a time of one hour, 53 minutes.
In second position was Zephirin Henri Leo Jairree of French Guiana with Guyana’s Christopher Holder and Geron Williams taking the third and fourth spots respectively.
Jairee had broken away from the pack but was chased by the Guyanese who eventually wheeled him in. In the ensuing sprint finish, Greaves managed to pip the French Guiana cyclist.
On Saturday, the four-member Guyana team of Greaves, Williams, Holder and Scott Savoury, took top spot in the 15k (10 laps) event. Though each team was required to field four cyclists, the winning time was decided by the time the back wheel of the third cyclist crossed the finish line.
Guyana won Saturday’s event with a time of 21 minutes, 38 seconds while French Guiana was second in 22 minutes, 43 seconds and Suriname third in 22 minutes, 58 seconds.
