Prof. Rory Westmaas in his letter captioned “Moving our capital to a higher location is the only solution” (02.10.22) makes a good case for moving our capital and indeed all the residents of our low lying coast to higher ground. But a case for attempting to improve and heightening our existing sea defences surely lies in the need to preserve our rich and fertile coastal clays. For Guyana depends on two of its economic pillars i.e. sugar and rice which are both deeply rooted on the coastal plane.
