Acting president of Guyana Samuel Hinds has paid tribute to the organizers of the just concluded Inter-Guiana Games for the “keenly contested and well organized event, a release from GINA stated.
After three days of competition among Guyana , Suriname and French Guiana Suriname were declared overall champions of the three-discipline competition.
The event concluded at the Cliff Anderson Sports Hall on Sunday with Hinds and other officials from Guyana, Suriname and French Guiana paying tributes to the competitors.
The closing ceremony came minutes after Guyana defeated Suriname in the final of the male basketball competition, giving them the number one spot. The Guyanese males also gained first place in volleyball.
The acting President joined Minster of Culture, Youth and Sport Dr. Frank Anthony and representatives of the French and Surinamese delegations in presenting trophies and medals to the participants
Hinds said that he was impressed with the enthusiasm and support which were evident at the games, noting that potential exists for it to grow larger, the release stated.
He said Minister of Culture, Youth and Sport Dr. Frank Anthony had outlined several plans for expansion of the games among the three countries through workshops for sports trainers, coaches and other officials.
He commended the visiting teams for their participation which also included a cultural presentation at the closing ceremony. He noted that both Suriname and French Guiana will be sending delegations to participate in Carifesta X next year.
“It matters not how you win or lose, but how you play the game,” the acting President quoted to highlight the importance of participation and congratulated Suriname for being the overall champions.
Credit for the success of the event was given to representatives who were part of the local organising team with support from the National Sports Commission (NSC), the Ministries of Culture, Youth and Sport, Home Affairs and Health.
Head of the Surinamese Delegation and Acting Director of Sports Michael Watson commended Guyana for the organisation of the games and underscored the importance of such events in creating stronger neighbourly relations.
