The Banks DIH Thirst Park ground will come alive this evening when the inaugural Banks DIH/Claytons Kola Tonic Masters international football tournament commences from 6pm.
The tournament will see past football players of varying degree of skills and fitness, competing for the lucrative $400,000 first prize.
The second and third placed teams will receive $200,000 and $100,000 respectively.
Two beverage companies from Guyana and Barbados in Banks DIH and Claytons Kola Tonic respectively are the main sponsors of the competition and it is not surprising that three teams from Barbados and a number of local sides will battle for the top prize.
Even a United States of America team, the Starliners, has decided to throw its hat into the ring.
The result is sure to be exciting football especially since the competition has attracted former national players from both Guyana and Barbados.
The teams have been placed into three groups A, B and C with the top two teams from each group along with the best two third placed teams advancing to the quarter-finals.
Matches will be played at three venues in the Guyana National Service ground, The Banks DIH Thirst
Park ground and the Georgetown Football Club ground.
Among the teams in contention are Claytons Kola Tonic Notre Dame, GFC, Georgetown Allstars, Pele, Western Tigers, Wildey and Carib Masters.
Former national wicketkeeper Monty Lynch and former cricketer Clinton St Hill of Barbados will try their feet with the bigger ball while other Barbadian players expected to be on show during the three day tournament are: Jerry Alexander, Ainsley Cumberbatch, Wayne Sobers, Michael Harewood and Adrian Davis of Barbados.Roddy Walcott will spearhead the Starliners team which also includes
Gordon and Charles Ashford and Floyd and Cordell Haynes.The Georgetown All Stars team one of the favourite teams will be led by Terrence Archer and will include Sir Anthony Stanton, Selwyn Bailey, Nigel Massiah, Jolyon Lewis, Andrew Hazel and Ron Austin.
