Chaos erupted yesterday at the Smyth Street, Licence Revenue Department (LRD) as persons were turned away after being told that the office was out of provisional book covers and driversโ licence covers.
This, Stabroek News was told, is a regular problem at the office.
However, persons are now concerned more than ever over the situation because of the renewed crackdown by traffic police in the wake of the road carnage. Persons said that while they could have accepted being told that books are not available in the past they can no longer accept this with all the new measures that are being taken by the Guyana Police Force.
It was only on Tuesday that Acting Commissioner of Police Henry Greene announced several new measures that will be implemented to deal with increased road fatalities.
These measures also include traffic campaigns which would see drivers being penalized for minor traffic breaches.
When Stabroek News visited the office to enquire about the books it was told that the books would not be available until Monday.
This newspaper contacted Khurshid Sattaur, Commissioner-General of the Guyana Revenue Authority who said he was not aware of the problem and would be in a better position to comment on Monday.
