O’Neil to defend L/heavyweight title Nov. 24 -GBBC card taking shape with US, Brazil fighters

Gwendolyn ~Stealth Bomber’ O’Neil is set to headline the Guyana Boxing Board of Control’s (GBBC) next fight card set for November 24. O’Neil will take on American Veronica Rucker in a 10-round bout which will be doubling as a mandatory defence for the ‘Stealth Bomber.’

The local female pugilist has been on the verge of being stripped for some time now owing to inactivity, but intervention by the GBBC has seen her being given a reprieve. O’Neil will defend her Women’s International Boxing Council (WIBC) light heavyweight belt against the top ranked Rucker, a fight that has been in the works for some time now. President of the GBBC, Peter Abdool, the card will continue the

(NCN).

“We have met with NCN and have confirmed that it is technically possible to broadcast the card live. We are currently in negotiations with sponsors as we want to give them maximum mileage, and we are also finalizing the composition of the card,” the man at the helm of professional prizefighting in Guyana told Stabroek Sport.

Abdool said several possible venues were being considered with a decision due shortly.

Meanwhile, at least one other fight on the card has been set with rising star Lennox ‘Pretty Boy’ Allen facing his stiffest challenge yet in the form of Leon ‘The Lion’ Gilkes.

Allen is fresh off a first round stoppage of Rafael Romero of the Dominican Republic and will be keen to cement his status as Guyana’s next world champion. Gilkes is a seasoned contender with a reputation of a granite chin and a warrior’s heart. Only recently he gamely battled Mitchell Rogers toe-to-toe for the national heavyweight title before losing.

Word is also out that this eagerly anticipated card will feature several international fighters including pugilists from the United States and Brazil. The card was originally touted for this weekend but with television audiences to consider, the GBBC has scouted out a clean date on which the fight card should be the major television event.
