Some 30 persons were detained early yesterday morning as police carried out several raids around the city and on the East Bank Demerara as far as Grove.
According to a police source the areas in central Georgetown which were raided included South Ruimveldt, Princes Street, Norton Street and Guyhoc Park. Stabroek News was unable to ascertain how many of those detained were still in custody up to late last evening.
Meanwhile this newspaper was told that among those arrested was a man who was wanted by the police in connection with fraud. He had been obtaining money after identifying himself as an employee of the Office of the President. One police source said they had received numerous reports about the man whom they now had in custody and who was likely to be charged following investigations.
The other persons detained had been taken in for questioning in connection with minor offences which included loitering and possession of small quantities of cannabis and other illegal items.
