A blazing unbeaten 44 from just 20 balls, decorated with seven fours and one six, by Robert Burns, helped Demerara Cricket Club (DCC) defeat Transport Sports Club on run-rate in their Georgetown Cricket Association (GCA) Steve’s Jewellery-sponsored Over-40 cricket competition at the DCC ground, Queenstown, yesterday.
DCC scored 211-8 from 30 overs to which TSC replied with 133-7 after 27 overs.
DCC, sent in to bat, were 76-6 at the end of the 12th over of their innings, but some solid batting from Zaiff Hussain (24) and Derek Neblett (30 not out)
and an enterprising 32 from Errol Thompson piloted DCC to their eventual total. Bowling for TSC Albert Woolford and Randolph Lall took 3-24 and 2-25 respectively.
In reply, TSC reached 133-6 at the end of 27 overs as bad light brought an abrupt end to the game, thus handing DCC victory on a faster run rate. Leading the way with the bat for TSC was Terrence Daniels, who made 65 decorated with seven fours and Shawn Massiah, whose 22 included three fours.
Bowling for DCC, M. Griffith took 4-27 and Demerara coach, Orin Bailey 2-5. Scores DCC 211-8 30 overs; TSC 133-6 27 overs.
Action in this competition will continue today with Everest Cricket Club taking on Steve’s Jewellery at GNIC and Malteenoes sports Club (MSC) confronting Georgetown Cricket Club (GCC) at Bourda. Action will commence from 12:00h.
