Colin Ming won last Saturday’s A.H. and L Kissoon Group of Companies-sponsored golf tournament but a 12 year-old-newcomer created a stir in the one-day event at the Lusignan Golf course.
Ming, playing with an 11 handicap, scored a gross 75 to finish the day with a net 64.
However, 12-year-old Lusignan Primary School student Avinda Persaud, playing without a handicap scored a gross 84 to beat most of the more seasoned players in only his second tournament since becoming a member of the Lusignan Club a few weeks ago.
Persaud, who served as a caddy previously, was given a special prize in recognition of his achievement and lauded by senior members of the Club.
Clifford Reis placed second with a handicap 27, gross 94 and a net 67, while the third place position was captured by Imran Khan with a handicap of seven, a gross of 77 and net 70.
The tournament attracted 27 golfers all of whom are looking to find form ahead of the upcoming Guyana Open.
President of the Lusignan Golf Club (LGC) Hilbert Shields, thanked the Kissoon Group of Companies for sponsoring the tournament and outlined plans for two major championships scheduled for this month.
The sponsors were represented by Company Secretary Mr. Basdeo and Maintenance Manager Mr. Persaud.
This week-end the local golfers will take part in the Le Meridien Pegasus tournament on Saturday and Sunday which is expected to be a prelude to the Guyana Open set for the following week-end.
Play will start at 12:00 hours on Saturday and at 08:00 hours on Sunday.
Shields disclosed that this year’s Guyana Open will be sponsored by Smirnoff Vodka and will be known as the Smirnoff Guyana Open Golf Championships.
Golfers from the United States, Canada and Suriname are expected to compete in the two-day championships on November 17th and 18th.
