The driver of the car which was involved in an accident at Kara Kara has been charged with two counts of causing death by dangerous driving and is set to appear at a Linden court tomorrow.
Twenty-eight-year-old Gopinauth Perreira, of East La Penitence, was taken into police custody to assist with investigations after he was discharged from the Georgetown hospital yesterday.
Meanwhile one year-old Yonla Torres, who was a passenger in the car, has been discharged from the hospital though her older sister, 17-year-old Gailla Torres remains hospitalized. On Sunday the girls’ mother, 42-year-old Kellian Torres and grandmother, 62-year-old Claudia Prince, died in the accident after the car they were travelling in toppled off a bridge at Kara Kara on the Soesdyke-Linden Highway.
Reports are that the family was travelling to Linden. Meanwhile relative Ron Prince told Stabroek News that he is still to hear from the owner of the car, Godfrey Telford, who survived the accident. Prince said he only travelled from the interior yesterday, after receiving the message that his mother and sister had perished in the accident, but neither Telford nor the police have contacted him.
This newspaper understands that Perreira who is a mechanic and the other occupants were heading to the races at the South Dakota Circuit but after realizing it was too late diverted to Linden instead. Telford had said that during the journey, as they were crossing the Kara Kara bridge, he felt the car shaking. The man said he immediately told the driver to stop but before Perreira could have reacted the car toppled off the bridge and landed in a creek. Telford said when the car landed he heard Yonla crying and he quickly climbed through the window and rescued the child who was stuck in mud.
