A teenager accused of attempting to kill another man was granted bail when he appeared at the Leonora Magistrate’s Court yesterday.
The 16-year-old boy who was jointly charged with 60-year-old Edward Raghubar was not required to plead to the indictable charge of attempting to commit murder and was granted bail in the sum of $150,000 by Magistrate Fazil Azeez.
Raghubar had previously appeared at the same court to answer to the charge and had been remanded but later granted bail in the High Court. The juvenile had not appeared as the police were unable to locate him.
It is alleged that on October 3 at De Groot, Uitvlugt, West Coast Demerara, the duo unlawfully and maliciously wounded Mowrat Khan with intent to commit murder.
Attorney-at-law Humkumchand had appeared for the defendants. In his submissions yesterday he stated that his client is still a juvenile and after the incident occurred “fear took the better of him” and he ran away. He stated that the boy’s family located him and turned him over to the police on Monday. The attorney added that the teen has a complete defence while regarding the older man there is “nothing on him at all”.
Police Prosecutor Ramsahoye Rambajue in opposing bail stated that there was a difficulty in locating the teen.
Humkumchand however responded that his client’s relatives had turned him over to the police.
After listening to the submissions, the magistrate granted bail and ordered the teen to return to court on December 20 at the Leonora Magistrate’s Court.
