Dear Editor,
Two and a half years ago President Bharrat Jagdeo launched his unconstitutional “search committee” to find a candidate for judicial appointment after a failed attempt to reach agreement with the Leader of the Opposition Mr Robert Corbin on the appointment of a Chancellor.
The office of Chief Justice was not vacant, but the President had nominated Mr Carl Singh as Chancellor. Mr Corbin nominated Justice of Appeal Claudette Singh as Chief Justice. The President rejected her nomination and Mr Corbin did not consent to the appointment of Carl Singh as Chancellor as required by the Constitution.
It must be remembered that Justice Claudette Singh was the judge who declared the 1997 elections void because of widespread voting irregularities. It is now payback time as can be seen from the President’s uncompromising position.
Now that Justice of Appeal Claudette Singh has retired, desperate attempts are being made by the President to resume consultation with the leader of the Opposition.
Yours faithfully,
A Paul
