A helmet trick from Guyana’s Stanford Tw-enty/ 20 star Lennox Cush and a belligerent 98 from Chris Barnwell were the highlights of the third round of matches of the Guyana Cricket Board (GCB) Carib Beer/Pepsi-sponsored Twenty20 first-division competition played yesterday.
At the Malteenoes Sports Club ground (MSC), the home team, batting first against neighbours Transport Sports Club (TSC) rattled up 185-6 from their 20 overs with captain and national Twenty/20 star Orin Forde scoring a belligerent 75 and West Indies U-19 skipper Steven Jacobs scoring 53.
Forde struck six sixes and five fours in his blazing knock while Jacobs struck five sixes and three fours.
Bowling for TSC medium-pacer Shawn Massiah took 3-41 and left arm spinner Kevin Ross, 2-22.
TSC, in reply, were restricted to 52-9 as Cush bagged the first helmet trick of the competition.
Cush, whose decision to make himself unavailable for selection on the current Demerara Inter-County team in order to concentrate on the shorter form of the game, paid off as he bagged four wickets off four balls to end with 5-10 from 2.2 overs.
Fast bowler Delroy George supported with 2-19 from four overs.
Barnwell misses century
At the Police Sports Club ground, Chris Barnwell narrowly missed out on the second century of the competition when he was bowled in the final over by Shawn De Souza as Demerara Cricket Club (DCC) easily defeated Guyana National Industrial Corporation (GNIC) by 55 runs.
Taking first strike, Barnwell plundered the GNIC bowling, hitting seven fours and four sixes as DCC posted 159-7 from their 20 overs.
Timothy Nurse followed up his undefeated 77 in the fifth round of the Cell Link Plus three day competition with a worthy 20. Garfield Newton 2-19, De Souza 2-31 and Rayon Griffith 1-20 were the principal wicket-takers for GNIC.
In reply, GNIC were bowled out for 104 in 18.4 overs with David Dick 50 being the lone batsman to offer resistance to the bowling of Dennis Squires 3-14, Gavin Nedd 2-12 and Kevin George 1-12.
Everest resists arrest
At Camp Road, home team Everest Cricket Club resisted arrest from their neighbours to the far west Police Sports Club.
Sent in on a typical flat Everest wicket, the visitors were bowled out for 86 as Troy Gonsalves (3-25), S. Heeralall (2-10) and veteran David Harper 2-13 did the damage.
In reply, West Indies under-19 selectee Rajendra Chandrika struck an unbeaten 52 from 40 balls and, in collaboration with Krishna Arjune, 27 not out, saw their team to 87-1 from 11 overs and victory by nine wickets.
GCC humiliates GYO
At Bourda, the home team Georgetown Cricket Club (GCC) showed their visitors Ghandi Youth Organization (GYO) who were the bosses with a comfortable 42-run victory.
Batting first, GCC scored 191-4 from 20 overs with Leon Johnson scoring 56 from 36 balls decorated with two sixes and three fours.
Ravi Sarwan also got among the runs with 38 which included three fours and a six whilst Wasim Haslim 35 (5x4s; 1×6), Robin Bacchus 30 (5×4) and the in-form Vishal `Cheesy’ Singh made 18 not out.
Bowling for GYO, Sauid Mohammed took 2-32.
GYO, in reply, were restricted to 149-6 when their overs ran out. Anthony Ifill made 36, Carl Bowen 27, Sauid Mohammed 28 and Wazer Mohammed 18. Bowling figures for GCC were unavailable up to press time.
