Top officials of Guyana Telephone and Telegraph Company met with President Bharrat Jagdeo last week to look at the economic and technical aspects of building a new international submarine fire optic cable directly to Guyana.
The first of its kind, the new cable will improve the reliability of Guyana’s international voice and data telecommunications services, GT&T said in a press release.
According to CEO of the telephone company, Major General (rtd) Joe Singh, it was GT&T which took the initiative in 1998 to get the Americas 11 cable to run a spur into the Guianas. It was the first international fiber connection into these three countries, the release noted.
However, with a growing data network and with cuts occurring on the international segments of the cable GT&T began earlier this year looking to have a state-of-the-art undersea cable in Guyana. The cable will run from Trinidad and land in Guyana. It will likely have additional connections to Suriname and Brazil.
The objective, the release stated, is to provide increased redundancy and to make more bandwidth available to both business and residential customers.
According to Singh, GT&T is excited to be bringing new services and dramatically higher connection speeds to Guyana. The project execution period is anticipated to be between 12 to 15 months.
