Bad light intervened forcing an adjournment to the men’s 0-9 flight but defending champion Christine Sukhram leads in the ladies category at the end of day one of the Smirnoff Guyana Open Golf championships at the Lusig-nan Golf Course yesterday.
Twelve players are contesting the 0-9 flight regarded as the “super league” of the championships and the golfers in that category will pick up from where they left off yesterday with two holes to play.
Sukhram playing with a six handicap shot a gross 75 to end with a net 69 points to take the lead.
In second place is Surinamese Hanka Wallkerstorf playing with a 28 handicap she recorded a gross 100 to finish with a net 72.
Petra Beens with a 17 handicap is in third place. She recorded a gross 90 to finish with a net 72.
In the men’s 10-17 flight, Ian Gouveia with a 16 handicap shot a gross 82 for a net 66 to take the lead followed by Robin Singh of Canada (16 handicap) , he recorded a gross 83 for a 67 net to take the second position, while Lester Alvis (14 handicap) is in third place. Alvis recorded a gross 83 to finish with a net 69.
Mel Sankies leads in the men’s 18-28 flight he recorded a gross 97 to finish with a net 69 playing with a handicap 28, while Ronald Bulkhan with a handicap 21 recorded a gross 93 points to finish with a net 72 for second position.
The championships end today and there will be a presentation ceremony which is expected to be attended by Minister of Culture Youth and Sport Dr. Frank Anthony and Minister of Trade and Tourism Manniram Prashad and other senior functionaries including representatives of the sponsors Banks DIH, distributors of Smirnoff Vodka in Guyana..
