Guyana’s men’s rugby Sevens side retained their North American West Indies Rugby Association (NAWIRA) Sevens crown after a 7-5 final win over Jamaica on Sunday at the Winton Rugby Pitch, Nassau, The Bahamas NAWIRA website reported.
In the semi-finals of the two day tournament Guyana defeated Martinique 17-5 while Jamaica whipped Trinidad and Tobago 10-0.
The Guyana’s men’s team had earlier on Sunday defeated Trinidad and Tobago 24-14 and USA South 17-7.
On Saturday, the men’s team Grouped in Pool `A’ with Mexico, Barbados, and Trinidad and Tobago topped the pool with nine points with Mexico second on seven, Barbados third on five and Turks and Caicos in the cellar on three points.
The Men’s team whipped Turks and Caicos 26-4, Barbados 29-0 and Mexico 26-5 to advance to the next round.
Canada’s Development Team won the NAWIRA Women’s Sevens with USA Development Eagles in the runner up position and Jamaica third.
However, Jamaica by virtue of their third-placed finish were adjudged Caribbean Champions with the Guyana women’s team emerging as the runners-up.
The Guyana’s women’s team lost 10-24 to Canada, 5-7 to the USA Development Eagles team and 0-10 to Jamaica on Saturday.
On Sunday they lost 0-24 to the USA Development Eagles team, 0-38 to Canada and 0-12 to Jamaica.
The Guyana teams are expected to return home this evening.
