Three days after a government minister opened fire on a man at a night spot on the East Coast Demerara (ECD), police are yet to complete their investigation into the incident.
Joseph Doodnauth, the man who the government official allegedly fired several rounds at during an early Sunday morning brawl at a drinking spot at Montrose ECD, was up to yesterday nursing wounds to his head.
A senior police official on the East Coast told Stabroek News yesterday that Doodnauth had lodged a formal complaint and ranks were investigating it. The official said that when the investigation was completed the file will be submitted to the Director of Public Prosecutions for action.
According to reports, Doodnauth and a woman with whom the minister had a relationship were at the Montrose bar when the official entered around 1 am Sunday. On seeing the woman, the Member of Parliament reportedly asked her why she was there in the company of Doodnauth.
Doodnauth responded and an argument ensued, which led to a fight. Doodnauth later left the bar and was heading home, when the minister allegedly hit him down with his vehicle. He then reportedly exited the vehicle, stood over the man with a gun and fired a few rounds, none of which hit Doodnauth.
The police source said residents in the area contacted ranks at the Sparendaam Police Station who responded and escorted Doodnauth to the hospital for treatment.
The police have confirmed that they have taken statements from the minister and Doodnauth as well as persons who witnessed the incident.
