Magistrate Chandra Sohan sentenced a labourer to four years imprisonment and six strokes after he admitted to a charge of robbery under arms when he appeared at the Whim Magistrate’s Court on Monday.
The court heard that on November 14, Daniel Weekes, 26, of Little Africa, Race Course, Springlands, while armed with a gun and a knife, robbed 19-year-old Heman Rajkumar, a teacher of the Corriverton Primary School, of $3,000 and a gold chain valued at $40,000.
In presenting the facts of the case, Police Prosecutor, Sergeant Michael Grant, told the court that Rajkumar, of Number 68 Village, was in the school’s compound when Weekes entered, placed the gun to his head and relieved him of the items.
Weekes pleaded guilty to the offence and after Magistrate Sohan handed down the sentence, he placed his hands on his head and exclaimed, “Oh God!”
