The recent military action by Venezuela against Guyanese mining operations in the area of our common border is deeply troubling. The situation requires responses, which will reassure the Guyanese people that their rights within their territory will not be violated by external military intervention.
From reports in the media there appears to be a difference of opinion on the exact location of the Venezuelan military action.
Meanwhile, Guyana had dispatched an investigation team to the area and now awaits a report from the Venezuelan authorities on their own investigation. Having regard however, to Venezuela’s dilatoriness in the past in giving responses (witness the case of the killing of Mr Persaud) I suggest that other actions be considered by Guyana. One could be recourse to the UN or the OAS for a technical fact-finding mission. Venezuela should be made to acknowledge culpability and agree to pay compensation in a timely manner.
Incidentally, what is the status of the UN Good Offices process?
