Ropesh Tulsiram of Anna Catherina, West Coast Demerara pleaded not guilty to the charge of obtaining credit by fraud and was granted bail in the sum of $80,000 by Magistrate Fazil Azeez.
It is alleged that on January 20, at Anna Catherina, he obtained several alcoholic beverages from Nankumar called ‘Borie’, with intent to defraud him.
The items he obtained from Nankumar, as listed in the charge, are: a case of white rum, a case of 40-oz vodka, a case of one litre water, a case of Smalta, half a case of cherry brandy, half a case of Banko wine, two cases of Carib beer, two cases one litre drinks, two cases 20-oz water, three cases of Guinness, six cases of Banks beer and two cases of Premium beer all valued at $70,720.
The matter was reported and following investigations, he was arrested and charged.
Tulsiram told the court that he took the items for his shop and had taken credit from the virtual complainant before. Asked whether he could pay back the money he stated that he would have to be given time to do so.
Police Prosecutor Ramsahoye Rambajue asked that the defendant be kept in custody since he was making no effort to pay.
After listening to them, the magistrate granted bail in the sum of $80,000, which Tulsiram said he would be unable to post. He will return to court on January 8 next year at the Leonora Magistrate’s Court.
