A pastor caught speeding, who said that he was rushing to start his service on time, was fined $15,000 when he appeared at the Leonora Magistrate’s Court to answer to that charge yesterday.
Ramroop Glen Parker admitted that last Tuesday on the Harlem Public Road, West Coast Demerara, he drove his bus PJJ 6262 at a speed greater than that specified by law. He was fined $15,000 with an alternative of 20 days imprisonment by Magistrate Fazil Azeez.
Police Prosecutor Hamaladeen Baksh told the court that the pastor was driving at 65 miles per hour.
Parker, in explaining his actions, said that he was rushing so as not to be late for his 2 pm service and because he was stopped he did not arrive in time.
He also stated, “in America we drive faster than that” adding that he drove on the American highways a lot and at a greater speed.
The magistrate explained to him that this was Guyana and fined him.
