A 45-year-old teacher will have to spend the holiday season in prison after Magistrate Allan Wilson remanded him yesterday on an indecent assault charge.
Vijay Singh Jaigobin denied the charge when it was read to him in the Georgetown Magistrate’s Court.
Jaigobin who is a teacher at an East Bank Demerara private school allegedly fondled a 15-year-old girl on Tuesday.
The prosecution, in objecting to bail, pointed to Jaigobin’s status and said he should not be in a classroom interfering with children.
Meanwhile Jaigobin, who was unrepresented in court yesterday, said that all of his relatives are abroad and his passport has expired so he has nowhere to go.
He also told the court that when the incident allegedly occurred he had not yet arrived at work. He claimed that he arrived at work after lunch. However, the prosecution said the information from the police was that Jaigobin was arrested at school.
After listening to both sides, the magistrate announced that he was refusing bail and adjourned the matter to January 4 at the Providence Magistrate’s Court.
