Berbice Police defeated Rose Hall Community Centre by 100 runs in their rescheduled first round game in the Berbice Cricket Board zone of the Guyana Cricket Board (GCB) Carib Beer/Pepsi sponsored national Twenty20 first-division cricket competition played at the Rose Hall Canje ground yesterday.
Batting first after winning the toss, Police, led by an enterprising 94-run third wicket partnership from eight overs between Albert Sinclair (60, 5x4s; 2x6s) and Roy Jafferally 45 (1×4; 4x6s) reached 179 all out from 19.4 overs. Fast bowler Michael Newland chipped in with a breezy 21 for the lawmen. Bowling for Rose Hall, Daryl Narine bagged 3-17 and Romesh Munna 3-23.
Rose Hall, in reply, were bowled out for 79 with Shawn Jhetto, 23, being the only batsman to resist the lawmen who had their opponents struggling at one time on 29-5 and then 52-8. Fast bowler Jevaughn Stephens, who took two quick wickets to setback Rose Hall, ended with 3-12 with Newland, who took a wicket with the first delivery of Rose Hall’s innings, claiming 2-7 and Jason Leitch 2-31 to complete the rout.
Action will continue today with six matches in the two zones. In zone ‘A’, Blairmont Community Centre will take on Rose Hall Community Centre at Blairmont, West Berbice will host Bermine at Bush Lot and Young Warriors and Police will battle at Cumberland. Zone ‘B’ action will pit Rose Hall Town Windies Sports Bar against hosts Albion Community Centre at Rose Hall, Scotsburg United against Kildonan and Port Mourant hosting Skeldon Community Centre at Port Mourant. All matches commence at 1400hrs.
