Five persons including a 17-year-old boy appeared in the Georgetown Magistrate’s Court yesterday charged with robbery under arms and they were all remanded to prison by Magistrate Hazel Octive Hamilton.
In the first case, Kevis Rover is accused of robbing a woman at knifepoint. It is alleged that on November 3 at Georgetown while being armed with a knife, he robbed Amy Cassius of one Razr cell phone, six gold rings, one pair of gold earrings and a gold chain with pendant, together valued $155,000.
He was not required to plead to the charge and Police Prosecutor Shellon Daniels asked for bail to be refused. Rover who was unrepresented did not say anything to the court in his defence. He returns to court on December 14.
Two men next appeared before the magistrate charged with using a cutlass to rob a man of his valuables while he was walking along High Street.
Troy Fraser also known as Dennis Simon and Pellew called `Wawa’ were not required to plead to the joint charge.
It is alleged that on November 20, while being armed with a cutlass they robbed Forbes Thomas of one cell phone, a national ID card and $800, a total value of $5300.
Both men were unrepresented but Pellew told the court that he left his work place on Broad Street and was headed to the park to catch a bus to go home when a police van pulled up. He allegedly that ranks dealt him two lashes to his head, put him in the vehicle and took him by a container where he was questioned.
Pellew said the ranks asked him if he knew Fraser saying that a robbery had just taken place.
The man stressed that he knew nothing about the robbery.
“All I see is a big fat man come in front of me and said that he just get robbed by two men and if I know any of them,” Pellew said.
When asked by the magistrate, he said he complained “to a big one” at Brickdam about the lashes he received.
Daniels objected to bail and the matter was adjourned to December 14.
And two teenagers were brought before the magistrate accused of robbing two men at gunpoint on the same day.
It is alleged that Peter Lamb, 19, of ‘MM’ Benn Street, Wortmanville and Akeem Goodluck, 17, on November 18, while being armed with a gun robbed Antoni Bouchard of one cell phone valued $100,000 and one Citizen watch valued $26,000.
It is also alleged that they robbed Antonio Worrell of a silver chain valued $5,000 at gunpoint.
They were not required to plead to the charges.
Attorney-at-law Michael Summersault who is representing the duo, was unable to attend court yesterday, but Attorney-at-law Boston spoke on his behalf.
Boston said that Lamb lives with his extended family and has been working as a reserve at the Guyana People’s Militia since July. Goodluck she said lives with his mother and is self-employed as a mason.
According to the lawyer, the two have cooperated fully with the police and were even placed on $5,000 station bail. She said that they returned several times to the Alberttown Police Station to assist with the investigations.
Boston said that she was instructed that the young men were taken before Magistrate Oneidge Waldron Allicock on Thursday afternoon and were sent away on their own recognizance. However they were rearrested and their station bail revoked.
She stressed that the two never attempted to avoid cooperating with the police and said that they would not be a flight risk.
The court later told Boston that the instructions she received about what transpired on Thursday were inaccurate. The magistrate told her that the matter was taken to the wrong court and as such the matter was adjourned for the next day. She said that the right court was not sitting on that day.
Daniels then informed the court that Goodluck has a pending matter of a similar nature in Court Six. She then objected to bail for both of them on the grounds that a weapon was allegedly used in the crime.
The matter will continue on December 14.
