Over 1,000 cases of speeding have been made out for the first month of the Police Traffic Department’s zero tolerance campaign, dubbed Operation Safeway.
A police press release said yesterday that the police have made a total of 7,722 cases against defaulting motorists with the bulk being in A Division – Georgetown/East Bank.
The operation, which relates to traffic enforcement, and is aimed at improving safety on the country’s roadways commenced on October 25.
Giving a breakdown of the traffic offences committed in the various divisions across the country from October 25 to November 25, police said that for ‘A’ Division (Georgetown/EBD) there were 2,843 traffic cases; ‘B’ Division (Berbice), 2,221; ‘C’ Division (ECD), 1,103; ‘D’ Division (West Demerara/EBE), 1,230; ‘E&F’ Division (Linden & Interior), 143 and ‘G’ Division (Essequibo) 182.
Speeding was the most prevalent offence. There were 1,043 speeding cases, 879 overloaded minibuses, 567 cases of obstruction, 376 failing to confirm to sign cases, 247 cases of breach of road service licence, 302 cases of stopping within 30 feet of a corner, 241 cases of failing to exhibit fitness, 177 cases of failing to exhibit revenue licence, 134 dangerous driving matters, 98 tinted vehicles, and 209 uncertified motor vehicles.
