Defending champions Alpha United retained their Premier League title with a 1-0 win over Western Tigers on Sunday in the feature clash of the Georgetown Football Association (GFA) Cellink Plus competition at the Georgetown Football Club ground.
Gordon Henry scored the only goal of the match in the 26th m,inute from the penalty spot as Alpha United ended on 28 points.
And Pele who drew 1-1 with Fruta Conquerors in the supporting match and who played unbeaten throughout the competition, took the runner-up spot with 26 points, while Fruta Conquerors on 22 points ended in third place
The opening encounter was interrupted by a power failure early in the second half which lasted for approximately 30 minutes.
However, the sold out crowd endured not only the black-out and intermittent rainfall but they were also restricted from encroaching onto the field of play by the erection of a perimeter fence.
Jomo Hinds put Conquerors ahead after 30 minutes but Dirk Archer equalized one minute later.
Both teams were reduced to nine men after Lance Rolston and Neville Stanton of Fruta Conquerors were given marching orders by referee Wayne Joseph, while Pele’s Quason Winter and Sheik Kamal were also ejected.
Pele was adjudged the best defensive team after conceding a mere eight goals while Alpha United was voted the best offensive team scoring 28 goals.
The teams were met prior to the start of the match yesterday by marketing director of GT&T Winston Robertson, GFF’s technical director Jamaal Shabazz and GFA’s treasurer and second vice-president Omesh Singh and Jason Benjamin respectively.
