The Rose Hall Town Windies Sports Bar cricket club was yesterday the recipient of two cheques totalling $230,000 from David Burgess, proprietor of Windies Sports Bar.
He remarked that he was delighted to be associated with the club and had no regrets about it.
“I met Hilbert (Foster) about five to six years ago and after such a meeting, decided to come on board with the club only this year after their former sponsor Courts (Guyana) Ltd did not renew their commitment, sponsoring them to the tune of $350,000 and uniforms. It has been sweeter and sweeter ever since, and I would like to say that continued sponsorship would be forthcoming from the Windies Sports Bar to the club in the years ahead,” Burgess stated.
Prior to receiving the cheques, secretary of the club, Foster, briefed the small gathering of media personnel about the club and its history to date.
“Rose Hall Town is one of Guyana’s leading youth and sports club and can be ranked amongst Albion and the Georgetown Cricket Club as one of the top cricket clubs in the country also. We have won two Club of the Year awards and recently the Busta Champion of Champions competition in Berbice as one of the many feats achieved to date.”
Foster further stated that the club was pleased to be taking part in competitions under the Windies Sports Club banner.
The club not only caters for cricketers, but also conducts HIV/AIDS awareness programmes, educational and feeding programmes for the less fortunate, among other activities.
One of these activities attracted a $100,000 donation from the Windies Charity Shop on Church Street, a non-profit organization that is run by Burgess’s wife.
