The man who was detained by police for questioning on Tuesday last following a robbery attempt on a Herstelling businessman has been released on station bail.
The man was released from the Providence station lock-ups yesterday.
On Tuesday last, two men and a woman approached Mohamed Sareef Abrahim at his 126 First Street, Herstelling home and held him at gunpoint while demanding cash.
However the 68-year-old businessman managed to fight off one of the gunmen and his other two accomplices ran away.
Meanwhile, a police source has also confirmed that the AT 192 car, which was intercepted following the robbery attempt was still at the police station, as investigators continue to work on leads. The car was picked up after eyewitnesses gave the police a description of the get-away vehicle. Investigations are ongoing.
Abrahim, who has been operating a small-scale, money-lending business at his home for the past three years, had told this newspaper that he had heard someone calling at his gate and invited them in. However, once the two men and a woman entered his house, where he would normally conduct business, the two men held him at gunpoint as the female stood watching on at the door. The gunmen then began to demand cash, but the businessman grabbed at one of them and a scuffle began.
The other two perpetrators then decided to run away as the businessman started to scream “thief”. Stabroek News was told that after the gunman who was involved in the scuffle with the businessman realized he was left alone he too decided to flee. They left empty-handed and boarded a burgundy AT192 car which was reportedly waiting on the East Bank Demrara Public Road.
