Minister of Health Dr. Leslie Ramsammy has challenged the Rotary Club of Georgetown to make their annual Day of Sports for the Physically Challenged a national event, and committed government’s support to the organization in that regard.
Dr. Ramsammy threw out that challenge while declaring open the event at Thirst Park on Sunday.
Asserting that Guyana was ahead of the Caribbean through the continued hosting of such an event, Ramsammy thanked the Rotarians for their continued interest in the activity.
Current Rotary president, Doodnauth Persaud, said that the event was not about winning, but was about participation.
Participating organizations included The Open Door Centre; the Ptolemy Reid Rehabilitation Centre; the Linden Centre for the Handicapped; the West Coast Berbice CBR(Community Based Rehabilitation); the East Berbice CBR; and the Essequibo CBR.
Trophies were awarded for the Best Banner, won by The Ruimveldt Parent Support Group; Best Uniform, won by the Region Five CBR while the trophy for The most Disciplined Organization went to the Guyana Association for the Visually Impaired. The Region two CBR, sponsored by Scotia Bank, copped the trophy for The Best Sponsored Team;and The Ptolemy Reid Rehabilitation Centre was the overall winner of the march past.
