Two men, one of whom was armed, injured an East Coast Demerara woman last evening during a failed robbery attempt outside the Igloo Ice-cream parlour on Camp Street.
Kamla Bheer of Oppress, Enmore who was with her husband at the time of the attack was treated at the Georgetown Public Hospital after sustaining a blow to the head and was subsequently sent away. Her husband was unharmed.
The incident occurred some time close to 7 pm and according to reports, the two men accosted the couple outside the ice-cream parlour, one brandishing a gun. They then demanded the bags both were carrying.
Hospital sources said Kamla Bheer refused to hand over her bag while her husband complied but the bandits seemed more interested in her bag. The man with the gun fought the woman for her bag in full view of several persons who were close by at the time, as well as those in passing vehicles.
When it became apparent that Kamla was not parting with her bag, the bandit struck her on the head with the gun. Sources said the men, who were on foot, became aware of the onlookers and eventually fled empty-handed, dropping the husband’s bag before making good their escape.
The police were alerted and within minutes a mobile team was searching for the men but up to press time no one had been arrested. A police patrol remained in the area for nearly two hours after the incident had occurred.
