Britany Van Lange and Henk Lowe of Dorado Speed Swim Club are the individual point leaders after three days of competition in the Guyana Amateur Swimming Association’s National swimming Championships at the Castellani Pool.
Van Lange leads the way for the girls in the individual championship with 68 points for all of her record breaking performances in the girls’ 9-10 year-old category. She made her most recent recent addition to the record books yesterday when she shattered the eight-year 400m freestyle record of 6:45:39 held by Shenelle Bemmer Hairmara.
She swam 6:08:86s yesterday to edge Soroya Simmons who also broke the record when she swam 6:11:80s into second place.
While young Van Lange is out in front, it may not be for long as club-mate Noelle Smith trails close behind with 63 points.
Smith continues to produce brilliant performance in her category despite being somewhat under the weather.
Health did not seem to be a factor influencing her performance yesterday as she destroyed the 100m Butterfly record of 127:58s previously held by Kristyl Robinson, setting a new time of 1:19:07s in what seems to be her favourite event.
Defending champion Yannick Roberts who is currently on a Cuban scholarship, was stripped of another national record when Jamaal Sobers took advantage of his absence to set a new time in the 15-17 boys’ 400m freestyle event.
The new record stands at 4:34:64s while sobers is currently in sixth postion in the individual championships.
Lowe, who has 93 points, took a commanding 26-point advantage over his closest competitor into the final day of competition.
The other record breaking performance yesterday came from Orlando Mc Rae who broke his own record in the boys’ 15-17 50 metre freestyle when he swam a time of 31:42.
The championships will conclude today after the rest of exciting events have been completed.
