The New York-based Lima-Coffee Grove Association of North America has made a generous contribution to an accident victim in dire need.
President of the organisation Alfred Baychu on Thursday handed over US$1,000 to Wahid Khan called ‘Giant’ of Cotton Field, Essequibo Coast.
Baychu told this newspaper that after reading of and hearing about Khan’s case, he along with the other members of the association pledged to make the donation. He also said that although they have made the donation, other Guyanese who have come to know of Khan’s case are currently seeking more donations through the various churches in New York.
Khan told Stabroek News that he has been in a wheelchair since 2004 awaiting the fulfillment of many promises made by various members of the Cabinet that he would be able to travel overseas for a long overdue operation. He said he had been riding his motorcycle when he came into contact with a dog, causing him to lose control. He fell, injuring his back in the process.
He said at the time he was employed with the Guyana Rice Producers Association and he was given US$500 by his employer, which he used to travel to Trinidad for the recommended scan.
Khan said the local hospital did not have the required length of rod his back required and the operation was done in Guyana with a shorter rod. He has seen no improvement in his condition.
The injured man told this newspaper that a number of organisations had pledge to support him in his quest to raise US$15,000 for the corrective operation to be done in Belgium. He has managed to raise only US$8,000 so far.
Khan said he wishes to thank those who have recognise his need and supported him in his quest, However he is still far from the target amount and hopes kindhearted citizens would come to his aid, as his family is doing all it could.
Baychu also donated US$1,000 to the Lima United Cricket Club last week.
