Dear Editor,
I find it incomprehensible that the President and his Government have failed to take any action yet against the Minister of the Government who was recently implicated in the shooting incident on the East Coast. There are several factors which reflect the questionable morality of the people who are supposed to be setting the tone of the nation. Perhaps the leading one is the flagrant hypocrisy of a Government/Cabinet that have closed ranks around one of its own while at the same time appearing to believe it maintains the moral purity/integrity to cast aspersions on others. I suppose the fact that elections are four years away and this matter will be a distant memory in the minds of the people should also be considered .
How can we trust these people to govern with honesty and integrity if there is such blatant disregard for the law and the police? In addition, what respect will the criminal elements have for the government and the police as they sit and look at what’s going on? This further erodes whatever confidence we, as Guyanese, have in the ability of the police to remain independent.
We all know this matter will be brushed under someone’s rug. Who knows who will be awarded with a promotion within the ranks or earn some supernumerary position within the near future?
A final word, I believe that this reluctance of the President and his Government to act against this man has been the straw that broke this voter’s back .
Yours faithfully,
M Khan
