Fearless Flyers, a female netball team from the New Opportunity Corps (NOC) made their debut in the national netball championships last week-end at the Cliff Anderson Sports Hall.
And, last Friday, the team, accompanied by coach, Lawrence Kellman, paid a courtesy call on Minister of Culture, Youth and Sport, Dr. Frank Anthony, at his Main Street office.
During the brief meeting, minister Anthony wished the team well and stated that whether they won or lost, their participation in the championship was in itself a plus for the institution, particularly in view of his ministry’s ongoing efforts to de-stigmatize the institution and change the public’s perception of it.
Speaking with Stabroek Sport, coach Lawrence Kellman said that the team had been involved in in-house competitions for some time, and that they had developed to the point where they felt sufficiently confident to take on stronger, external competition.
Meanwhile, in a subsequent telephone interview with Stabroek Sport, Kellman dislosed that Fearless Flyers had performed creditably in the competition, finishing as first runners-up to the winners, All Stars. Additionally, he identified Natoya Hudson, who led the goal attack and Michelle Maxwell, who led the goal defence as the two most outstanding players for the Flyers.
The competition ended on Sunday.
