Alonzo Greaves and the other top finishers will finally get the opportunity to lay their hands on their coveted prizes won in the recently-concluded ‘Tour de Guyana’ five-stage cycle road race.
The race, held to sensitize the nation on the deadly disease HIV/AIDS, was sponsored by the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sport in collaboration with the Ministry of Health.
Greaves who won the second stage came out on top as the overall winner covering the distance of 256.4 miles (431kms) in a time of 11h:04m:28s, with Marlon ‘Fishy’ Williams and Leer Nunes, winner of the fifth and final stage, rounding off the top three 16 seconds apart.
In the Junior category, Chris Holder who placed seventh overall with a time of 11h:11m:41s came out on top from Enzo Matthews (10th) and Geron Williams.
And Ian “Dumb Boy” Jackson who won the fourth stage and placed ninth overall topped the under-45 Veterans’ category. Linden Blackman (11:30:41) and overseas-based Guyanese Terrence Budhram (11:52:160) rounded off the top three in this category.
Compton Persaud took the Over-45 age group with a time of 5:40:34 with Walter Isaacs and Monty Parris second and third respectively.
All the stage winners were presented with yellow jerseys and caps before the start of the following stage. The overall first prize of $200,000 is the richest in local cycling history.
The presentation of prizes will be held at the Umana Yana from 16:00h today.
