Dear Editor,
What again is the law doing to protect women in Guyana? It seems that there is never going to be an ending to the abuse women have to endure. A 17-year-old teenager was gang raped by a group of men. These men who are her co-workers and one supervisor obviously planned this blatant attack. They knew that little or nothing will be done to prosecute them. Seems as though they have no respect for anyone, their employer and least of all this girl. They should be given nothing less than a ten-year prison term.
Here is one case of a young lady who grew up in my neighbourhood. She was gang raped by a group of men. Every time this girl, who was the victim, went out, she would be made fun of and called all kinds of names. The men that raped her were never prosecuted, even though almost everyone knew because they boasted about what they had done.
Situations like this happen every day, and I guess if it does not directly affect us or our family we shouldn’t care. We need to have a champion for women’s rights, someone who is a public figure, to speak out about the wrongs done to women. Or doesn’t anyone care?
Yours faithfully,
Diane Lee
