The much talked about Guyana Model Search was officially launched on Thursday night at the King’s Plaza Hotel setting off a fashion fiesta that promises to take the country by storm.
Associate Editor of SHE Caribbean magazine, Sherry Dixon, was in Guyana to sit on the judges’ panel. She revealed to The Scene that they were very impressed with the hopefuls, adding that there was a tremendous amount of talent on show.
Dixon said Georgetown had the seasoned faces and a few fresh ones but overall the city had the most promising models. She noted that they received similar feedback in relation to the auditions held in Bartica.
The Guyana Model Search is not looking for someone with a pretty face alone, Dixon said, but for someone with a sense of worth that will represent not just Guyana but any professional agency out there.
Dixon said they asked a lot of hard questions during the auditions and according to her, the responses did not have to be the most intellectual ones. However, she pointed out that the person chosen as the winner must have a good command of the English language, adding that it is not just about a great body but about a personality as well.
Since the models selected for the competition will be trained, she said the prospects look good. She added that those who failed to make the final cut or become the eventual winner would be able to walk away from the experience with strength and lifestyle skills.
Dixon who started off in Financial Public and subsequently took up a job with The Voice newspaper in the UK has been working in beauty and fashion for over two decades.
She edited Pride magazine before taking up the job as Editor of SHE Caribbean a year ago.
She said her decision to come back home and be part of the model search has much to do with her friendship with designer, Sonia Noel. According to her, Noel works hard and stages quality shows. Dixon said she intends to support the initiative for as long as it is around.
