Director of the National Agricultural Research Institute (NARI) Dr Oudho Homenauth is calling on local tourism entrepreneurs to participate in a new agro-tourism venture. And proposals should be submitted to NARI by December 21.
According to a NARI press release, Dr Homenauth said that this new initiative is one of the policies designed to further diversify the agricultural sector and ensure the tourism sector’s survival in wake of the challenges posed by climate change. It is also expected to aid in the reduction of rural poverty through the creation of employment opportunities for many. “In NARI we are inviting expressions of interest to develop agro-tourism farms in partnership with the tourism private sector on prime farmland at Mon Repos, East Coast Demerara. These proposals should incorporate the areas of horticulture, aquaculture, livestock and the principles of agro-forestry, organic farming and sustainable tourism, in particular the use of indigenous/local materials, organic techniques/approaches
