Dear Editor,
Those of us who knew Kellawan Lall, nicknamed Peck, recall that he went to the Lumumba University in Moscow, Russia. He was sent on one of those Soviet Union scholarships. One did not have to have much formal education to study in those institutions. The main qualification was to be a member of the PPP or one of its outfits.
Lall returned from Moscow and was taken in the care of Mrs Janet Jagan, who was the editor of the Mirror newspaper during the late 1970’s. Lall worked as a reporter.
Janet Jagan wrote many editorials condemning the dastardly acts of the PNC dictatorship against defenceless people. Where does she stand on the current matter with Mr Lall? Surely, she must take a keen interest in such an issue that has assumed a national dimension. And this must be the “talk of the day” at Freedom House, the Party head office, when she makes her weekly visits.
The GAP-ROAR Member of Parliament, Everall Franklin, is quite right to state that the PPP was a disciplined party, but that was under the illustrious Dr. Cheddi Jagan. The PPP had produced highly respected men and women. They were people of talent, self discipline and industry. But today the PPP has lost the respect that it established.
After the Kellawan Lall episode one is left to wonder where we are heading when those in authority, who ought to set examples for posterity, are openly and fragrantly violating the rule of law. Let us not forget that Mr Lall is a law maker. He sits in the Guyana Parliament with others and makes the laws of Guyana, which he has consistently broken.
What is even further distressing is the response by the leader of the main opposition party, Mr. Robert Corbin, who is reported to have said: “let the people deal with Lall” or words to that effect. Does he not know what his role is in Guyana?
Yours faithfully,
Lawrence Persaud
