Larry Josiah and Sharmaine Clarke of Headquarters Division, were named Sportsman and Sportswoman of the year respectively when the Guyana Police Force held its annual awards ceremony last Wednesday at the Tactical Unit Square.
In the tight race for the Sportswoman-of-the-year award, Clarke got the edge over her other competitors by virtue of being not only the champion female athlete at this year’s Guyana Police Force Athletics championships, but by participating in many other sporting events both at the Joint Services and the club level.
She was a member of the Progressive Youth Club (Police) and represented them in many activities this year.
The choice of Josiah however, was more straightforward as he performed outstandingly as an officer-athlete throughout the year both locally and internationally.
Josiah performed creditably at the Joint Services level consistently placing in all of the cross country races and other events that were held.
He is also a member of the Progressive Youth Club and represented them at all of their meets including the relay championships and the AAG’s inaugural club team relay.
Josiah had a very productive year in athletics both locally and internationally.
He is beginning to establish himself as one of the region’s most outstanding law enforcement distance athletes and was adjudged champion athlete in the international category of this year’s Police Athletics championships.
Earlier this year, Josiah won five gold medals and one silver medal at the Antigua International Athletics championships which was held in August.
He has also played an important part in organising and officiating of almost all of the country’s athletic meets.
Pamela Phillips was adjudged female Sports Personality of the Year for her significant role in the coordinating of this year’s Guyana Police Force athletic championships as well as for her year-long service as an athletic official while Lyndon Wilson, better known to his athletes as `Coachman’ was adjudged Male Sports Personality of the year for the fifth consecutive year.
The well-rounded Wilson serves as coach of the Progressive Youth Club where he continues to produce the majority of the country’s top athletes on a yearly basis.
Wilson also played a significant role in the organizing of this year’s Police Athletic championships while fulfilling his role as one of the country’s top officials in athletics.
