Narayan Ramdhani, Darius Ali and Rose Mendes each secured a pair of impressive wins when they competed against players from Barbados in the singles event of the Guyana Classic International Junior Bad-minton Tournament on Saturday at the Queen’s College auditorium.
Although Ramdhani, Ali and Mendes are competing in the Under-11 category of the competition they were all able to step up and successfully challenge competitors in the Under-13 category.
In the boys’ Under-11 category, Ali and Ramdhani easily defeated their Barbadian competition in straight sets with Narayan disposing of John Ollivierre (BAR) 24-4, 21-1 and Ali following suit and making quick work of Shane Martin 21-8, 21-7.
The dynamic duo continued their rampage in the Under-13 division in which they once again completed straight set victories.
Ramdhani easily defeated Dandre Thorpe (BAR) 21-12, 21-12 while Ali had a slightly more difficult task in getting rid of the determined Cory Fanus (BAR) 22-20, 21-18.
Rose Mendes’ first victory in the singles tournament came when she defeated fellow Guyanese Maya Parsram 21-1, 21-2, while Amanda Yearwood of Barbados gained the edge over Priyanna Ramdhani 21-18, 21-17.
Mendes struck again in the Under-13 category when she once again secured victory over a local competitor in Natalie Khan by the scores 21-17, 21-10.
In the boys’ Under-15 category, local Nicholas Ali defeated Carl Broomes (BAR) 21-14, 21-14 while Avian Rodrigues (GUY) came back after losing the first set 21-23 to Shem Scantlebury, to commandingly win the next two sets 21-12, 21-18.
The girls’ Under-15 category witnessed some superiority by the Bajans as Cherian Fanus (BAR) defeated Avashti Persaud of Guyana 21-15, 21-11 while Monyata Riviera (BAR) defeated Kaela Stewart (BAR) 21-13, 21-14.
