Guyana Power and Light (GPL) Incorporated will be able to meet consumer demand throughout the season as the five power generating sets have arrived, but the company has not slackened on its call for energy conservation.
The sets arrived early yesterday morning and according to a statement from the company, four of them are already connected to the Demerara Interconnected System (DIS) from Sophia. The fifth is to be set up later this week at the Versailles Power Station, West Demerara.
GPL said government expended US$3.8 million to acquire the sets. It quoted Chief Executive Officer Bharat Dindyal as saying that the 10 megawatts of additional power will be sufficient to meet consumer demand. However, he stressed the absolute need for energy conservation in the light of the extremely high prices for diesel and heavy fuel oils that must be purchased from overseas to operate all power generating machinery in all three counties.
He reiterated that every effort each consumer makes to switch off and unplug an appliance would translate into monetary savings for both the consumer and the company.
The statement said the power company boss also stressed that it is imperative that every one begins to take stock of their energy consumption both in the home and in the workplace.
“People must start to realize that every time they push a plug into an outlet or press a switch on, they are spending money. Every time they pull a plug out, they save,” the statement quoted him as saying.
He also urged moderation in the use of decorative lights, appliances and electronic gadgets, which contribute immensely to the company’s enormous fuel expenditures for generation and transmission and distribution system maintenance.
