A commercial store offering goods and services for $500 and less is the new addition to private enterprise in Linden.
A Government Information Agency (GINA) press release said Prime Minister Sam Hinds officially opened the $500 and Less Superstore Consumer Complex Plaza at Republic Avenue, Linden on Sunday. He was accompanied by proprietor Dr Joseph Haynes and President of the Linden Chamber of Commerce and Industry Samuel Wright.
The store is the first in the mining town to provide products and services at such a low cost. This was made possible through the auspices of overseas-based Guyanese entrepreneurs and is an initiative which the prime minister said will expand the private sector.
Hinds said the store is symbolic of the private sector contribution to economic growth. “When we think about the private sector, we must think about the impulses to private enterprise in each of us. We must think about the spirit of entrepreneurship, ingenuity, innovation that is in each of us,” he said. Hinds also said he sees great potential for small business development and avenues for competition since similar stores are likely to be opened.
