Two bandits, one of whom was armed with a gun on Monday night robbed an overseas-based Guyanese couple of over $1.5M in cash and jewellery at their Unity Street, La Grange, West Bank Demerara home before escaping.
Police in a press release said that investigations revealed that Ramdeen and his wife were at home when he was aroused by noise at the front door.
The attack occurred at around 9:30 pm. Upon checking, he was confronted by two men, one of whom was armed with a firearm. The men held Ramdeen and his wife at gunpoint and took away $275,000, US$4,200 and jewellery valued at $700,000 and escaped.
No one has so far been arrested and a police source told Stabroek News that the lawmen are working on some leads and it appears that the robbery may have been committed by persons from the same area as had happened during a recent robbery at Nismes, which is a community close to La Grange. On December 6, four bandits had robbed the On the Go service station in that community. A sluice operator, Gewan Sookdeo of Bagotville has since been charged with the offence.
