The Guyana Football Federation (GFF) yesterday expressed shock over the news of the death of former national footballer Neil Hernandez who died tragically on Monday.
President of the GFF, Colin Klass, in a release stated that his executives were shocked and saddened by the news of the tragic death of the former national footballer.
“Indeed the football fraternity has been struck another blow with the death of this young, talented and promising player who once captained the national senior male football team,” Klass noted in the release adding that the GFF joined with the community of Bartica and all Guyana in mourning Hernandez’s passing.
Hernandez, who hails from Bartica will be remembered as one of the very talented young footballers on the national team who has had more than a few appearances at various regional tournaments as a member of national youth teams.
Quick-witted and a naturally talented athlete, Hernandez was a member of Alpha United Football Club and more recently the Fruta Conquerors Football Club with which he’d been training for the current Kashif and Shanghai tournament.
He was also under consideration to be included in the national senior squad which will shortly begin preparations for participation in the CONCACAF Preliminary Qualifiers for the FIFA World Cup 2010 in South Africa.
The release stated that Klass and his executives wished to express their sincerest condolences to the surviving relatives, friends and colleagues of the fallen footballer.
